About the Event
Dr. Jeffrey Fortin has done extensive research on Black Americans and African descended people in New England. Drawing on pamphlets, letters, and other documents, and painstakingly reconstructing geneology, Fortin will tell the story of Captain Paul Cuffe (1759-1817), an African-Wampanoag sea captain, and will place Cuffe’s experiences within the broader history of early America to show the central role of African-Americans in the founding of the United States.
